Membership & Application Pack
Due to strict legal requirements set by the Home Office there is a set process all prospective members must follow prior to gaining Full Membership. The process is as follows:
You must first arrange a 'First Visit' to the Club when you will be given a brief introduction to the range, the club and safety aspects of shooting will be explained to you. Should you wish to apply for Probationary Membership and attend your first shooting session, a membership application form and a copy of the Club Safety Rules will be provided, or can be downloaded from this page. To become a probationary member you must be at least 14 years old and be of sufficient stature to support the rifle in the prone position. This can be assessed on the first visit. Members under the age of 16 both probationary and full, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times whilst on club premises. There are no exceptions to this rule.
If you decide to progress your membership application you must fully complete the membership application form, read the club saftey rules and bring with you the following items for security and identity check:
- Photo ID such as driving licence / passport
- Proof of address such as Council Tax bill / Utility bill etc.
- Two recent passport photographs
- For junior members (under 16) the ID of a parent or guardian (items 1 and 2) may support the application and the must countersign the application
You will be issued with a Probationary Membership pack containing your membership card, among other items, and be eligible to shoot on the Bill Bruce Range. The membership card must be signed by the Range Officer each time you visit the range.
When you apply for probationary membership the Club must inform the police of your application. Probationary members must be supervised by a full member.
Probationary Membership is for a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months and is granted on payment of a non-refundable fee of £35.00. This covers your first 50 rounds of ammunition and also the use of a club rifle, jacket, sling, scope together with full coaching and instruction on basic marksmanship principles and the safe handling of firearms.
After using your first 50 rounds, you will need to purchase, from the club, ammunition. Current cost is £4.50 for a box of 50 bullets. All unused ammunition must be stored at the Club and not taken away..
During your Probationary Membership your shooting will be assessed to ensure you are capable of shooting safely with a rifle. Should you be deemed safe, you may apply for full membership of the club.
After the third month of your Probationary Membership, when you have attended the club for a sufficient number of visits, not less than 6, for the Club to assess your ability to shoot safely and there has been no reason identified which precludes full membership the Club Committee will then decide whether to offer you full membership of the Club. If you accept membership, you will be asked to pay a subscription based on the current annual subscription and the number of full months remaining in the club year. The annual subscription fee is currently £150. Junior membership is available to those under 18 years of age and those in full-time education. The annual subscription for junior members is half of the adult rate.
Should you wish to purchase your own firearm, you will need to be a FULL member of the club. An application for a Firearms Certificate (FAC) can be found on the North Yorkshire Police website.
The Club cannot provide a reference for an application for a Firearms Certificate until you have been a full member for two full years and have regularly shot on the Club Range during that time. The Club must inform the police if a full member does not shoot at the club for a period exceeding one year.
As a full member you may shoot whenever you want to as long as there are two full members present.
